Some backyards whisper potential.
This one practically yelled it from the hillside.
Set against the foothills of Colorado Springs, this property began as a steep, undeveloped slope. It had engineered retaining walls, protected scrub oak, and many elevation changes. Most people would see a complicated backyard.
Our Residential Design team at Timberline Landscaping saw an opportunity to create something extraordinary.
The result became an award winning landscape transformation that earned:

TL;DR: What Are the Challenges of Sloped Yard Landscaping?
Answer:
A Sloped Backyard With Big Potential
The homeowners were building their forever home. Not just a house. A place where muddy shoes, family dinners, late-night fire pit talks, and future memories all come together.
They wanted an outdoor living design that could grow with their family while embracing the natural beauty of the Colorado foothills. The challenge was designing outdoor spaces that felt luxurious and intentional without fighting the steep terrain.
Instead of flattening the site into submission like some kind of bulldozer powered pancake operation, the design worked with the slope.
That decision shaped everything.
Designing Around the Colorado Foothills
One of the most important parts of this project was preserving the mature scrub oak and existing natural character of the property. In Colorado Springs, scrub oak is a protected vegetation, so the design had to carefully integrate around the existing ecosystem rather than remove it.
The final design created three distinct outdoor living tiers:
Upper Tier for Entertaining
Closest to the home, the upper terrace became the social hub of the property.
This space features:
- Sage flagstone patios
- Fire pit gathering areas
- Outdoor seating areas
- Hot tub integration
- Panoramic foothill views
The materials were selected to feel natural, timeless, and connected to the surrounding environment rather than an overly formal or artificial look.
Basically, mountain modern without trying too hard.
Middle Tier for Recreation and Relaxation
The middle level introduced a soft open lawn designed for kids, pets, and flexible family use.
This terrace creates breathing room between hardscape spaces while maintaining clean sightlines across the property.
Ornamental grasses, drought tolerant plantings, and native inspired materials soften the transitions between levels while reducing long term maintenance needs.
Because nobody wants to spend every weekend babysitting high maintenance landscaping!
Lower Tier for Adventure and Play
The lower level embraced the natural slope while adding functional recreation zones.
This area includes:
- Sports court space
- Play areas
- Curving walkways
- Boulder integration
- Native plants
- Preserved vegetation
The result feels integrated into the hillside rather than imposed on it. That distinction matters.
Great landscape design should feel like it belongs there naturally. Like the property always wanted to look this way.
Solving the Challenges of a Sloped Yard
Sloped yard transformations are never just about aesthetics. Gravity always has opinions.
This project required careful planning for:
Drainage Issues and Water Flow
Multi-tier properties need strategic drainage planning to protect retaining walls, reduce erosion, and manage water runoff effectively.
The design team crafted every transition between levels to move water intentionally while maintaining visual cohesion throughout the landscape.
Accessibility Between Levels
Natural stone stairways connect the terraces safely and organically.
Instead of abrupt transitions, the pathways guide movement through the property while enhancing the experience of the landscape itself.
Preserving Existing Vegetation
Protecting mature scrub oak needed careful equipment access, special installation methods, and smart planting layouts. This helped avoid damage to root systems.
Why Design Build Landscaping Matters
One reason this project succeeded was the seamless collaboration between design and construction. With a full design-build approach, each detail stayed true to the original vision. From grading transitions to plant selection, everything stayed aligned.

Built for Real Life
One of the best parts of this project was that it was never designed just for photographs or awards.
It was designed for actual living.
For barefoot kids sprinting across the lawn.
For dogs chasing tennis balls.
For gathering around the fire pit on cool Colorado evenings.
For quiet mornings with coffee overlooking the foothills.
A great landscape doesn’t simply look impressive. It supports the way people actually experience home. That’s what makes thoughtful residential design so powerful.
